Social learning and belief transmission¶
Humans learn most beliefs not from direct evidence evaluation but by learning from others in their social networks. This capacity enables rapid cultural accumulation and technology transfer but also enables systematic spread of false beliefs when they arise.
Key mechanisms¶
- Replication: Most beliefs (scientific, historical, etc.) are adopted from trusted sources rather than verified independently
- Network structure: Beliefs spread through social networks; tight communities with weak external links limit information flow
- Trust-based adoption: Whom we trust matters more than the quality of evidence itself
- Cascades: Early adopters influence later adopters; information cascades can entrench false beliefs
Implications for misinformation¶
When propagandists, institutions, or random variation create biased information in a network, social learning can amplify and stabilize false beliefs. This is distinct from and complementary to cognitive biases that make individual belief false.
