Viral Spread¶
Viral spread refers to content that propagates rapidly through social networks, reaching many users through cascading shares, likes, comments, and reshares. "Viral" content is characterized by exponential or super-linear growth in reach and engagement.
Key concepts¶
- Structural virality — measured by the Wiener index (network depth and branching of share graph)
- Viral coefficient — average number of new shares each share generates
- Virality predictor features — what content and network properties correlate with viral spread
Implications for misinformation¶
Viral spread of misinformation is a central challenge in online information environments. False claims can achieve viral status through:
- Network structure (influential accounts, hub users)
- Content properties (emotional appeal, novelty, perceived importance)
- Temporal dynamics (early momentum, timing)
- User behavior (tendency to share without fact-checking)
