Generative Engine Optimization¶
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refers to techniques for optimizing web content to appear prominently in LLM-generated search results, analogous to traditional SEO for keyword search. As large language models increasingly serve as primary information sources, they become targets for adversarial content optimization.
Threat variants¶
Information-Preserving GEO (IP): Legitimate content optimization using structural formatting, authoritative phrasing, citation hooks, and semantic organization to improve visibility in LLM synthesis. Publishers employ IP techniques to increase reach; no false information is added.
Information-Distorting GEO (ID): Adversarial variant combining GEO optimization with embedded targeted false claims. Attackers craft or compromise web documents that rank highly in retrieval pipelines while injecting misinformation into the synthesized LLM response. Techniques include: - Fabricated citations and authority signals - Temporal framing (mischaracterizing timing or recency) - Structured formatting (lists, emphasized claims) that fragment false information into fluent text - Phrasing variation to evade simple keyword matching
Detection and defense¶
Current content-moderation guardrails (safety taxonomies, output-rail fact-checking) show limited effectiveness against information-distorting GEO. Chunk-level detectors trained to recognize manipulation patterns (e.g., contrastive learning from paired IP/ID rewrites) show promise.
