Misinformation campaigns

Misinformation campaigns refer to organized, deliberate efforts to spread false, misleading, or out-of-context information across one or more communication channels to manipulate public opinion, undermine trust in institutions, or influence political outcomes. Campaigns differ from isolated false claims in their scope, coordination, and intent.

Characteristics

  • Coordination: Multiple accounts, channels, or organizations acting in concert to amplify narratives
  • Scale: Campaigns reach thousands to millions of people via algorithmic amplification, cross-platform sharing, or mass messaging
  • Persistence: Campaigns often unfold over weeks or months, adapting to platform responses and current events
  • Multi-channel strategies: Content originates on one platform (e.g., Telegram) and spreads via others (YouTube, Twitter, Odyssee) to maximize reach
  • Automated amplification: Heavy use of bots, duplicate messages, and algorithmic favoritism to create false signals of popularity
