Citation Faithfulness¶
Citation faithfulness refers to whether a claim, statement, or generated text accurately represents the sources it cites. Unfaithful citations occur when:
- A claim misrepresents the scope, conclusion, or finding of a cited paper
- An LLM generates text that cites sources without those sources supporting the claim
- A researcher overgeneralizes from specific experiments to broader conclusions beyond what evidence supports
In the context of LLM-assisted scientific writing and fact-checking, citation faithfulness is critical: AI-generated literature reviews and citations must remain grounded in actual source content, not hallucinate support.
